Research Network Chair

Dr. David Humphreys is Emeritus Professor of Environmental Policy at The Open University, United Kingdom. He is proud to have worked teaching and researching sustainability and environmental policy at the world's leader in distance university teaching. He began his career specializing in international forest policy on which he was written two books: Forest Politics: The Evolution of International Cooperation (1996) and Logjam: Deforestation and the Crisis of Global Governance (2006). He has served as an advisor to the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development, as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Forest Institute and with five UK government delegations to the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF). He has been a UK representative on two major EU-funded research programmes on forest policy (COST Action E19 and COST Action FP1207) and served on four Global Forest Expert Panels convened by the International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO). His global leadership on sustainability research and scholarship led to his appointment in 2016 as Research Network Chair of Common Ground's On Sustainability community. His academic awards include the International Studies Association's Harold and Margaret Sprout Award (2008), an Honorary Fellowship from the Institute of Chartered Foresters (2015) and a National Teaching Fellowship from the UK Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE, 2017).
