Nadene Marx-Pienaar

Dr Nadene Marx-Pienaar is a senior lecturer in the Department of Consumer and Food Sciences at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She holds a PhD in Consumer Science, with research focused on sustainable consumer waste practices and climate change.

Her research centres on sustainable consumption, circular food systems, food waste reduction, consumer behaviour, and the development of innovative solutions that promote more resilient and sustainable food systems. She collaborates with industry, government, and non-profit organisations to translate research into practical impact.

A passionate advocate for sustainability, Dr Marx-Pienaar initiated the University of Pretoria's first environmental movement, GreenUP, in 2003 and currently leads the UP-Cycle Livinglab initiative, which promotes circular economy principles through education, research, and community engagement.

Dr Marx-Pienaar is an NRF Y-rated researcher, recipient of the University of Pretoria's NAS Teaching and Learning Award, and has been recognised with the University of Pretoria Vice-Chancellor's RE.SEARCH Award for excellence in communicating research and its real-world impact. She is committed to advancing sustainability through impactful research, teaching, and industry collaboration.
